Long Term Earth Observation Data for Forest Carbon Tracking: Australia’s Experience and Global Developments
نویسندگان
چکیده
The Australian Government’s National Carbon Accounting System (NCAS) was developed to report land sector greenhouse gas emissions to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and its Kyoto Protocol. NCAS uses a national wall-to-wall time-series of Landsat (optical) satellite data from 1972 to 2010. Independent verification has shown that the analysis can generate a stable and robust time-series analysis of forest cover

International Earth Observation Initiatives and Programs: the Context for Global Urban Mapping
Besides the dominant focus of urban remote sensing research on local and regional scales, the URS2005 conference offers a special session on “Global Observation of Urban Areas”. This session was jointly initiated by the GOFC-GOLD (Global observations of forest and land cover) emphasizing that coordinated, consistent, and operational urban mapping and monitoring has to consider the evolving effo...
متن کاملGeneration of Decadal Global High Resolution L-band Sar Dataset for Forest Carbon Tracking
Recently, the forest observation using the spaceborne sensor becomes a top issue in the carbon monitoring. Covering more than 20% of the global terrestrial areas, forests are rapidly decreasing, corresponding to 20% carbon dioxide release from the land. Deforestation and forest degradation mainly occurred in the developing country. L-band SAR is sensitive for monitoring the forest biomass, fore...
متن کاملLong-Term Post-Disturbance Forest Recovery in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem Analyzed Using Landsat Time Series Stack
Forest recovery from past disturbance is an integral process of ecosystem carbon cycles, and remote sensing provides an effective tool for tracking forest disturbance and recovery over large areas. Although the disturbance products (tracking the conversion from forest to non-forest type) derived using the Landsat Time Series Stack-Vegetation Change Tracker (LTSS-VCT) algorithm have been validat...
متن کاملGlobal Carbon Monitoring
Recognizing the growing need for improved Earth observations, over 130 governments and leading international organizations are collaborating through the Group on Earth Observations (GEO) to establish a Global Earth Observation System of Systems (GEOSS) by the year 2015. They are contributing their respective Earth monitoring systems to GEOSS and interlinking these systems so that they work toge...
متن کاملForest cover trends from time series Landsat data for the Australian continent
In perennial and natural vegetation systems, monitoring changes in vegetation over time is of fundamental interest for identifying and quantifying impacts of management and natural processes. Subtle changes in vegetation cover can be identified by calculating the trends of a vegetation density index over time. In this paper, we apply such an index-trends approach, which has been developed and a...
